Regulating the bonfire

Published: 10 June, 2011

• HOW timely of council leader Colin Barrow to announce his “bonfire of regulations” in the same week that arrests were made as a result of the horrific savagery exposed by the BBC’s Panorama in its undercover operation in a “care” home.

The consequences of private equity finance hoovering up local and national government contracts could hardly be clearer – even with a semblance of regulation still in place.

How much worse all this will get without any regulation at all does not bear thinking about.

Our leader confidently goes on to declare that the £1million saved could pay for “…26 teachers, 28 social workers or 44 street cleaners”.

It won’t, though will it, it will pay for the half a dozen senior council officials overseeing the bonfire.
