Premiere for a Marylebone musician

Published: 3 June, 2011

• THE English premiere of the haunting cello concerto by British composer George Lloyd (1913-1998) was held in London on Saturday.

It was a resounding success and a wonderful and timely antidote to the sterility of some of today’s classical music.

A Marylebone resident for the last decades of his very productive musical life, Lloyd wrote some of his most enduring compositions locally, including the concerto and his Symphonic Mass (One of the finest pieces of English choral writing of the 20th century – Gramophone).
