Mutilation is an anti-Islamic practice
Published: 9 June, 2011
• FEMALE genital mutilation is an anti-Islamic practice and not a religious practice as stated (Resilience is women’s middle name, June 2).
In fact is a deep-rooted customary tradition that has got nothing to do with Islam.
Please note the spelling of my name.

• CONCERNING your article (Resilience is women’s middle name, June 2), female genital mutilation is a cultural practice not a religious one and it is practised in many African and Asian countries.
It is also stated it is being done by with parents’ consent.
This, I believe, is because of a lack of knowledge or awareness of the harm it can cause.

• THESE Somali girls (Resilience is women’s middle name, June 2) have much to contend with coming into a misguided, so-called modern, liberal democracy which has let them down in its reluctance to defend their very basic human rights.
The left is the most guilty party in its naive “respect” for cultural relativity.
It is responsible for taking multi-culturalism down a very dark cul-de-sac whereby human rights abuses against female children have been allowed here in the UK.
The heinous abomination of FGM with its impunity and the secrecy surrounding it in this so-called modern democracy is the most horrific example of combined racism and misogyny which the left prefers to ignore.
We have allowed British citizens to continue to be horrifically mutilated. There can be no moral justification for FGM, yet there has been not one single prosecution.
Children are still being mutilated usually during the holidays on visits back to the “homeland”.
The law was changed in March 2004 so that this crime can be dealt with here in the UK even if carried out outside the country.
It’s time we stopped being too embarrassed openly to address FGM.
Let’s wipe this crime out in this the 21st century.
There is no culture, no tradition, no religion, no race and indeed no men who have the moral right to demand such heinous abuse to be carried out on a child.
It never was right nor is it morally right today.
