Laying the blame for the Wharf

Published: 23 June, 2011

• AFTER visiting the Hawley Wharf exhibition yesterday and finding the scheme as horrific in scale and insensitive as ever I came away convinced that the people we should blame for desecrating our neighbourhood – turning it into a giant recreational shopping and drinking area – are the councillors and council officers who are allowing it to happen.

The developer is doing what developers do: like it or not he is doing his job.

But what about the council? Isn’t it their job to protect us from the developer? They have the power to withhold planning permission for any further extension of the market. It is high time they used it.
