Idea on ID

Published: 10 June, 2011

• I SYMPATHISE with Stan Leeson (Letters, May 27) over Sainsbury’s policy of not accepting provisional driving licences as proof of ID.

However, midway through his letter my main sympathy shifted to the store manager who was given Mr Leeson’s thoughts on this policy.

I have worked in supermarkets myself, and know that it is fat cats in head office who make poorly-informed decisions and leave store staff to take the stick from disgruntled customers. And, to be blunt, other than make sympathetic noises, I am not sure what Mr Leeson hoped the store manager could do.

A better solution perhaps would be to write to tell the company that while this policy was in place he would take his custom, and money elsewhere.
