Extend the 20mph ban

Published: 17 June, 2011

• I KNOW many residents will be shocked by the tragic death of Theresa Lyne following the traffic accident in Hornsey Rise, Archway (Woman killed in minibus accident, June 10).

Sadly, Hornsey Rise is one of the few roads not covered by the borough-wide 20mph zone. I have been campaigning for it to be included for more than a year now. The road suffers from speeding cars and is confusing for drivers because the Haringey end is a 20mph zone.

Unfortunately, the plea to include Hornsey Rise and other roads in the borough-wide 20mph zone has so far fallen on deaf ears.

Last July, Labour councillors added a road in King’s Cross to the 20mph zone. Liberal Democrat councillors asked that other roads be included, such as Hornsey Rise, Junction Road, Highbury Park, Highbury Grove and Blackstock Road. But Labour councillors refused to back the move.

Why should residents around Hornsey Rise and other parts of the borough be treated differently? Why should they have to put up with speeding traffic and stop-start traffic signs as you turn a corner? This flies in the face of common sense. I hope Labour councillors will now start listening to what residents in these areas want.
