Why is it so wrong to enjoy watching children at play?

LADIES and gentlemen of the jury, I am a pervert.

I want to explain why I am a pervert. You see, I like to watch the grass grow; I like to watch the bees and the butterflies pollinating the flowers. I like to look at the sky; to marvel at the clouds and the different hues of blue. I like to sit outside cafés and watch the human race go by – the interaction of humans, as they go about their daily chores and business.

I like to walk in woods, with the smell of the good earth, and be with nature. It relaxes me; I feel human – in touch with existence. In a sense, a sort of spiritual. I also like to watch children play!

Now, this is the problem, watching children play. All the previous activities people wouldn’t be too concerned about. They might think I am bit odd or eccentric, but because I like to watch children playing, it's a whole different category.

This is wrong: “he must be a pervert or a paedophile”, when actually, all I get is the same feelings as what I described in the previous statements.

Now, in the 19th century, and part of the 20th century (probably up to about the first 80 years of the 20th century), it was considered normal to watch children playing. But, in the 21st century, it’s wrong for a man to do this. I think most men would not do it; they would be aware of other people passing by, and the paranoia that pervades our society. They would feel anxious, nervous – possibly even guilty.

I would like to state that for women and mothers with children, out there in society, most men (or nearly all men), would not be turned on sexually by watching children play. But, what it does do is it reminds them of their youth, when life was energetic and exciting, and sort of free. In fact it makes men feel young and in touch with their humanity.

It reminds them that they once were young.

May you stay forever young “old man”!
