Stamp on PO abuse
• I HAVE to object to the intemperate letter (PO held to account, July 15). The writer criticised Essex Road post office because it was unable to provide him or her with an inflation-proofed account, described as “the new one” having a £15,000 limit.
Having failed at the first attempt, this person returned after “another week or more”, where once again his or her attempt failed. It seems strange that the author of the letter did not try another branch rather than return to the one where they could not assist.
Perhaps the writer should be reminded that this post office branch was only saved thanks to a strong public campaign, at a time when many branches were being closed. From experience, I can say that at Essex Road there is nearly always a higher number of staffed positions pro rata than at any other branch I have been to.
It opens earlier and remains open even on Saturday afternoons, in contrast to other branches. Essex Road branch, above all others, serves the community well and does not deserve abusive criticism.
By the way, if the writer is referring to NS&I savings accounts, the Post Office no
longer handles these. I can find no reference to any other inflation-proof savings with a £15,000 ceiling, but even if I am wrong the general service provided at Essex Road should earn our praise and our gratitude.
