A vision for school site

Published: 14 January, 2011

• WE are concerned that attention is paid to the interests of residents regarding the redevelopment of the old Bowlers site at Crouch Hill by Ashmount School (Play goes back to nature, January 7).

The former Crouch Hill Recreation and Community Centre was a hub and valuable resource, off Parkland Walk. It is due to host a relocated school with a redeveloped Bowlers Nursery and Cape Youth Project.

Though a community plan is required under the planning permission, there may still be need to adequately recognise the need for detailed requirements, for compensating facilities and “wild play”.

Residents have met and identified some areas of concern:

• Development of a vision for the whole site, including the Parkland Walk and possibly including a community café.

• The need to provide inclusive facilities. Elderly keep-fit sessions were held at the old centre.

• Provision of facilities for classes and learning, including those which lead to local employment.

• Provision of a meeting space, both in and out of school hours.

• Continuing residents’ liaison.

• Ensuring an ecology centre at Cape Project is delivered.

• Scope to include local people in the management and upkeep of the new community park. Is a community development trust something which could access funding or support for a café?

• Provision of a wild play area for children.

Those wishing to add their voices and to make a contribution to the community plan are invited to a meeting at 7.30pm on January 20 at New Orleans Community Centre, New Orleans estate, Hornsey Rise, access by Cromartie Road, N19. We look forward to welcoming you.
