Photo opportunities and memorials

• AS Mark Newberry (In the cause of freedom, January 21) suggested there were perhaps public objections to Nelson’s memorial in Trafalgar Square in the 19th century just as there are today regarding Bomber Command’s planned park memorial.
Few tourists today are much interested in the historical significance of Trafalgar Square. Their main concern is the photo opportunity the area offers, particularly around the four massive bronze lions.
The same fate could await Bomber Command’s memorial in Green Park so long after the war.
Thankfully all sections of the RAF are substantially remembered at St Clement Danes in the Strand and outside is a statue of Sir Arthur Harris, wartime chief of Bomber Command.
