Nightmare on ice
Published: 7 September, 2010
• FOR three days before Christmas I had to go to Finsbury Park to feed my sister’s cat. I am over 70, and it was an absolute nightmare.
She lives in Endymion Road, on a steep hill. To me, there didn’t seem to be a hint of any grit laid by the council. Only one man I met was gritting the pavement areas.
On the third day, I thought it better to cross the park from Manor House. But that was even more terrifying as ice on the wide paths had started to freeze following a slight thaw.
Last year, it was just the same. Then, I had just spent five days in Berlin, where it was much colder and there was far more snow. But I didn’t slip once because everywhere was gritted. Why doesn’t that happen here?
