My thanks to strangers who make kindness an everyday discovery
Published: 7 January, 2011
• ONE compensation for becoming somewhat disabled has been the continued discovery of people’s kindness. Almost every day when I’m seen struggling along with my stick some kind person will offer a hand – an old lady, a young girl, a frail-looking old man, a youth – over a kerb, off a bus, up steps without railings, to help carry shopping, cross a tricky road – you name it.
Even to help me load my car – yes, I’m lucky to have a car, and even luckier with all my helpers.
Before Christmas a young woman not only helped me into the crowded post office but insisted on finding a member of staff who at once dealt with my order.
And only yesterday my two neighbours in the queue advised me to sit until my turn and then gave up their places to me.
Sometimes only a polite refusal with thanks is needed, but mostly one is only too grateful, and so I take this New Year opportunity to give my warmest thanks to all those kind and thoughtful people who have helped me, and to wish them a deservedly happy New Year.
