Higher tax rates would drive away our top-earners

Published: 28 January, 2011

• THE basic rate of tax in the mid-1970s was 38 per cent, rising to 85 per cent, and I believe another 10 per cent could be added if it was unearned income.

In this age of computers and instant communications, how many high-earners would be left in the UK if tax rates started rising to these levels, as some of your correspondents seem to want, and who would be penalised? Poor old Joe Public as usual.
