Fares rise not so fair

Published: 6 January, 2011

• EARLIER this week, local activists in Camden were joined at West Hampstead tube station by Ken Livingstone to protest against Boris Johnson’s huge fare increases.  Londoners are being hit hard by a double blow of Osborne’s 2.5 per cent rise in VAT and Boris’s hike in fares.  Since becoming Mayor in 2008, Boris has raised the price of a single Oyster bus fare by 44 per cent, from 90p to £1.30. Yet he is blowing millions on vanity projects such as the new routemaster bus, which will cost £11million, and scrapping the western extension of the congestion charge zone.
