An end to loo agony

• ISLINGTON could solve the problem of providing public toilets by following the example of Richmond upon Thames, which runs a community toilet scheme.
In certain pubs and shops, members of the public can use toilet facilities during opening hours, with no obligation to buy goods or services. Businesses taking part in the scheme are paid £600 a year by the council, and are identified by a sticker on their windows.
Richmond’s scheme has been running for several years, to everyone’s satisfaction. The council doesn’t have to provide and maintain toilets, the businesses cultivate goodwill, which increases trade, and the public have decent toilets to use.
