Council tax

Published: 27 January, 2011

• I WATCHED the webcast of the full council meeting because there was an item on the budget and wanted to see what reception it would get.

I was not to be disappointed! There was Andrew Mennear requesting assurances from finance member Theo Blackwell that he would rule out raising council tax to protect some front-line services. Clearly his party prefers the elderly to be abandoned, and young families forced to become unemployable because of proposed closures to the play services. I have an elderly parent who would probably die because of the proposed cuts and, as a 25-year-old single mum in full-time employment, I’d be devastated if I were to be forced to give up my job because of the cuts.

There is no option but for everyone to pay an extra pound or two in council tax so our economy and way of life does not go back to Thatcherite years!
