Spirit of mutual liking

• IT was heartening to read Dan Carrier's account of the memorial service to community campaigner Joan Stally (February 3) at which “Labour councillor Roger Robinson recalled that… while she was a dedicated Conservative Party member, their different political outlooks helped rather than hindered their friendship”.
It is sad that it is surprising today to hear of well-motivated people of sharply contrasting views meeting in a civilised spirit of mutual liking.
