School’s scheme did not face opposition from neighbours

Published: 11 February, 2011

• I WAS disappointed to read your News In Brief (Girls’ school plan approved, January 20).

It is misleading and factually incorrect.

First, I would like to correct the claim that the scheme “had met with opposition from neighbours”. We have worked hard over the past months to develop a plan which incorporates the views of local residents, as well as English Heritage and conservation officers, and are delighted that approval for the building works was unanimously passed. There was no opposition.

The use of the adjectives “giant” and “two-storey” is misleading. Our plans include provision for an underground sports hall which will be fit for purpose. By its nature, this likely will have higher ceilings than in classrooms but it will not be “two-storey” or “giant”.

When our marketing manager sent information to your reporter on January 19, we clearly stated that a date had not been set for the project to begin. This is still the case. Making the claim the work “could start in the summer holidays” is, again, misleading.

In the future, if you are unclear of any facts relating to South Hampstead High School please contact us to clarify the information.

I look forward to more accurate reporting in the future.

Headmistress, South Hampstead High School
