Priced out of justice

Published: 3 February, 2011

• THE Conservative-led government is proposing to slash the legal aid budget such that those who cannot afford to pay for legal advice will be denied access to justice.  Denying people recourse to the law means there is no equality before the law, one of the foundations on which our entire way of life is based.

To say that this is unfair is a gross understatement.

It is incumbent on us to make clear to the government that we do not support these changes.

We must ensure everyone is treated fairly under the law, no matter who they are or how much money they have.

I urge Islington residents to join Justice for All (www.justice4all.org.uk), a coalition of legal and advice agencies, charities, trade unions, law firms, community groups and members of the public, to show their support for the campaign to protect free legal advice.
