Phone mast campaign is a victory for people power

Published: 18 February, 2011

• I’D like to thank all the residents who took part in the campaign against plans to put up a 10-metre high mobile phone mast at the entrance to Whittington Park, in Archway, right next to a nursery school and a primary school.

I’d also like to thank the Tribune for highlighting our campaign (Mast for park is experiment on our children, says mum, November 19). Vodafone and O2, whose plan this was, told Islington Council they have given up on this site, although they may be looking elsewhere in the area in future.

We have been warned, and we are looking out for them.

It’s unbelievable that they thought a spot right by the most popular park in the borough, especially with young people, would be the right place. Residents have been putting so much time and energy into improving the park over recent years.

It’s a victory for people power, and good for all of us in times like these to know that we can do it.
