Idlers must be curbed

Published: 11 February 2011

I AGREE that there should be spot fines for engine idlers (Letters, February 4).

Many drivers leave their engines running while they use their mobile phones, sometimes for inordinate lengths of time.

Others leave them operating when they call on somebody or deliver something.

All this causes much unnecessary and avoidable pollution.

Particularly objectionable are the lines of taxis all with their motors on, spilling out loads of unpleasant fumes.

Spot fines would go a long way in discouraging this form of anti-social behaviour.
