Goodbye to gyratory

Published: 3 February, 2011

• RESIDENTS and businesses have wanted it removed ever since it was built, and for the past 16 years it has also been the policy of Islington Council and Transport for London to get rid of the Archway gyratory.

Last week, we heard that the Highbury gyratory is to go, at a cost of £2million. Islington has £2million grant funding to spend on public realm improvement in Archway.

That means the same could happen here, achieving long-term benefit to all those using the area.

But money is now being allocated to small-scale improvements within the Archway island, still separate from the bigger-picture changes to make it accessible.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a massive reduction in the impact of traffic on Archway centre. It mustn’t be lost.
