Difficult decisions

Published: 17 February, 2011

• AS councillors we’re extremely concerned about the threatened closure of the Netherwood Day Centre in Kilburn ward (Massive blow for sufferers and carers as Town Hall reveals latest victim of ‘coalition’s cuts’, February 10).

We’re concerned the plans will leave Kilburn ward, and whole north and west of the borough with insufficient provision and have been asking the council to think again.

It seems Netherwood Street is a much more suitable facility for those with care needs like those described in your report, in terms of the centre’s building and grounds, and we know its users and their carers benefit enormously from the service it offers.

This government have imposed unprecedented cuts on Camden, which is forcing the council to make incredibly difficult decisions across all service areas.

The scale and speed of these cuts make it impossible to avoid hitting front-line services and, in turn, some of the most vulnerable in society.

The government should be ashamed for targeting cuts at the weakest in society.

As ward councillors, we will continue to work with all in the community and local elders’ groups to bring pressure to bear on the council officers and cabinet to reconsider this decision and to explore all options to save the Netherwood Day Centre.
