Cuts hurt

Published: 25 February, 2011

• MELVYN Caplan, the Conservative cabinet member for finance, has been recorded on the ITN news saying there will be no significant cuts to front-line services and that most economies will come from backroom jobs.

“No children’s centre will be closed”, he stated. Yet the Portman Centre in Church Street ward has had cuts of almost £200,000 to its budget. The council is actually cutting children’s and play services by twice the amount even the government has recommended.

Cllr Caplan and his colleagues should have the courage to tell residents the exact extent of their swingeing economies on the lives of vulnerable people.
