Anyone for a free lunch?

Published: 3 February, 2011

• SOME parents and campaigners have been calling for free school meals for every Westminster pupil.

To provide a free school lunches to all, irrespective of income, would affect those who are unfortunate enough really to need this facility and would be expensive.

Those who can afford to pay should pay.

As a pensioner I regularly secure food from the supermarkets at “knock-down” prices which may be stored and used later.

This is surely not beyond the means of most families.

From a working-class background myself I do not recall lacking basic food provision when I was growing up and the benefits now available were then non-existent.

School meals were provided at subsidised rates, not for free.
