Plate glass alienation
Published: 18 August, 2011
• THE complaint used to be about the neo-Stalinist school of “brutalist architecture”.
Will Camden’s development and planning control officials finally wake up to the fact that their allowing the spread of acres of plate glass in Camden High and Chalk Farm Road is an example of their condoning “consumerist brutalism” at its very worst, thus Camden itself provided every incitement to window-smashing and rioting?
It is hardly surprising the rioters apparently felt alienated from society (and in no way am I seeking to condone riots) when Camden has spent so much time replacing our community high street with a grotesque identikit consumer one? Thus planners are in part to blame for recent events.
No new plate glass should be installed throughout our area.
It should be banned forthwith.
