High hopes

Published: August 25, 2011

I’D like to congratulate Camden’s A-level and GCSE students on their results.

It’s a pleasure to see so many young people being rewarded for their hard work. It’s also a credit to the quality of our schools that our results continue to compare favourably with neighbouring boroughs and London-wide performances. This year’s students face many challenges and uncertainties. Unemployment among young people is soaring. The government has scrapped the Education Maintenance Allowance that assists the more deprived GCSE students to carry on studying.

A-level students face greater competition than ever for university places with huge increases in fees coming in next year.

With current headlines it’s easy to forget that the overwhelming majority of our teenagers are positive, productive citizens with high hopes and aspirations. Let’s take pride in their achievements; in these times they deserve far more from us than our good wishes.
Cllr Larraine Revah
Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families
