After the annexe, people need a say on what could be built

Published: August 11, 2011

WHAT I find worrying about the council’s sell-off of the Town Hall annexe building is that they are refusing to let local people have a say in what replaces it (New Town Hall – at what cost? August 4).

Before they got in, the Labour councillors for King’s Cross said that we need tough rules spelling out, in black and white, what developers can and cannot build after they demolish the Town Hall annexe.

Since they were elected, they seem to have quietly dropped this pledge.

They can’t just do a deal with developers behind closed doors.

Residents need to have a say on what gets built.

Can we have affordable and shared ownership homes?

Can we get shops and other facilities? And how high will they be allowed to build?

Unless we lay down what can be built, developers will come up with whatever they like – and then “consult” us.
