Rock on! Unsung Heroes and music on our doorstep
Published: 7 April, 2011
• I WANT to say a huge thank you to the New Journal readers for so strongly supporting my Unsung Heroes initiative over the last three months.
Over 100 people were nominated for an award, so it’s clear that we helped spark lots of interest all across the borough.
Camden really is the music capital of the UK and the world, with hundreds of thousands of people flocking to our live music venues every year.
We estimate that there are nearly 7,000 local jobs associated with the music industry and this helps boost our local economy, tourism and our standing throughout the world.
I’m delighted that we have been able to thank many of the talented people that work behind the scenes to keep Camden’s music heritage alive.
Particular thanks go to our generous sponsors: Bulldog Gin, Camden Town Brewery, King’s Cross Central, Apollo, The Roundhouse and UK Music. Their support helped us to fund this initiative at no cost to local residents.
As your Mayor I made a commitment that I would celebrate Camden’s music heritage over the year. Unsung Heroes has hopefully helped remind all of us that we have great music to be proud of on our doorstep.
I’m proud that so many have got involved and would urge everyone young or old to rock on!
JONATHAN SIMPSON
Mayor of Camden
