Quality control?

• I HAD to laugh recently, well choke more like, when I read that the government is considering giving up to £1,000 to social housing tenants to go towards home improvements.
The part that struck me as laughable, was the response from a local council association member, who suggested that the idea wasn’t necessarily a good one, as the council tenants might not spend the money wisely, by employing outside contractors to do the work which could be shoddy and and not up to local council standards.
Our estate had almost nine months of refurbishment works by the council, which were an unmitigated disaster.
In more recent days, it took four visits by council workmen to fix one small leak in the toilet.
So perhaps someone can explain how the idea of getting in private contractors to do the work could be any worse.
