Protect our small shops
Published: 8 April, 2011
• ISLINGTON Council is investigating whether planning permission can be given for a Budgens supermarket in the small shopping centre at Campdale Road, Tufnell Park.
The supermarket will occupy five shops, which is far too large for a small shopping area in a side street. It will dominate the area, and the large plate glass windows and big signage will be destructive of the character of the street.
Islington has a policy of encouraging small shops. This development will remove three existing small shops in a street where there has been a recent revival of this type of business.
The street already has serious parking problems, with double parking of cars and delivery lorries unloading in dangerous places. These will be made much worse if a supermarket is opened.
I hope the council will follow its own guidance, and refuse permission.
