Peaceful neighbourhood no place for venue like this

Published: 15 April, 2011

• THE decision-makers at Islington Council who have approved a drinks licence, seven days a week, in one of the quietest areas of Islington need to be locked up in the House of Detention.

The licence for this arts venue in Clerkenwell was vigorously opposed by local residents, including many elderly people who live right next door to the place.

As one resident put it, what about respecting older people in their twilight years?

It is somewhat shocking that this licence has been granted, given the strength of opposition, the peaceful location in a largely residential area and especially given it is immediately beside sheltered housing for the elderly.

A crowd of 100 people make significant noise just talking, especially if they’ve had a drink – have a listen at Clerkenwell Green on a Friday evening.

The roads around the venue are tiny, with awkward twists and turns.

As well as possible disturbance to residents, there is the very serious issue of emergency services being impeded by parked delivery vehicles, taxis or crowds.

The venue can be sure that residents will be carefully monitoring noise pollution, anti-social behaviour, litter, blocking of pavements and roads.

It is not a place for crowds of 100 to gather nightly – that will severely impact on the quality of life for elderly residents and those of us who chose to live in the area because of its peace and quiet.

We sometimes have film crews working in the area, and residents are generally very supportive of them, but as soon as alcohol is introduced it is an entirely different situation.

Thanks to the Tribune for taking an interest in this.
