A long wait for a book
Published: 1 April, 2011
• YOUR correspondent Susan Kaye is wrong to take such a complacent view of the cuts to library services (Letters, This is hardly a programme of closures, March 25).
Not only is St James’s Library in Victoria Street closing in September, but Charing Cross Library will be closing and moving to share the Leicester Square Reference Library.
On top of this, the budget for buying new books will be cut by £250,000 – a reduction of 40 per cent.
As for the council’s claim that there will soon be a new library in Victoria, I suggest that Ms Kaye does not hold her breath.
Construction work on the new library will not start until 2015 at the earliest.
Four years is a long time to wait for a library book.
Perhaps this is the new standard of “customer service” we can now expect from the Conservatives?
