Energy bill and beyond
Published: 7 April, 2011
• FRIENDS of the Earth organised an excellent meeting in the Town Hall to discuss the Energy Bill currently going through parliament (Warm Front, Letters, March 31).
We all agreed that we need a bill that means that there is some way of ensuring that landlords of privately rented homes bring them up to satisfactory standards so that tenants can stay warm and comfortable without huge heating bills.
Camden could get on with insulating homes and should work towards doing this street by street.
It can borrow the money to do so through government schemes or put in place arrangements for raising money through community bonds.
Waiting for an Energy Act, then waiting for Tesco or Sainsbury to lend some money, and then waiting for people to borrow, is not good enough.
I am afraid in the end it may just be too little too late, unless the community demands action from its leaders.
