Cloud over solar power
• I AM the “unlikely environmental hero” (that made my children laugh) who was the subject of your report (Sun sets on pensioner’s bid to bring solar power to flats, April 8).
It seems that public interest has led to Islington Council agreeing to an extension of its deadline to allow me more time to convince my landlord, Gemequal, of the benefits of solar panels being mounted on our roof.
When an action is good for the environment, supported by neighbours, the council and the government and yet is blocked by a property company that collectively owns the freehold of a building one wonders how “the Big Society” espoused by our government will ever come to pass.
Having said that, I am heartened by the support of environmental groups and individuals who have made many helpful suggestions.
Maybe from such public interest the impetus to cause property companies to be required to provide reasonable grounds for objecting to a sustainable energy installation that is recognised by government to be something in the common good will be forthcoming.
