An alternative we wouldn’t want
Published: 7 April, 2011
• SARAH Allen and Lee Baker call for a debate about the Alternative Vote (March 31).
I would suggest that the Lib Dems are the only crowd likely to benefit from it. Voters of the two major parties are not likely to name each other’s party as second choice and as few of us will have heard of the minor ones (except perhaps the Greens) the Lib Dems are likely to be the second preference all round.
In that case, although none of us really wanted them, apart from the minority of their own supporters (who will not be doing any favours for either of their main rivals), we’ll all be stuck with them, indefinitely. Is that the alternative we really wanted?
