Why was I rejected?

Published: 24 September, 2010

• HAVING had my recent offer to serve on the Homes for Islington board for free ignored by said body, I have now failed to reach the interview list for Islington Council’s corporate governance committee.

Being rather disappointed at not being able to serve my community – and I was going to donate my fees to charity – I asked myself why I failed to make the shortlist.

Having been a successful businessman for more than 30 years, was I too qualified? Being a mature-age student with a BA, an MA and about to study for a PhD, was I too learned?

Having got off my bum and stood as an independent in the recent council elections, was I too enthusiastic?

I don’t suppose I’ll ever find out – the council did not even have the courtesy of telling me about my rejection let alone the reason why. I had to phone them. Still, I suppose the poor dears are trying to save money on communications.
