We didn’t want wage

• I SERVED on Clerkenwell Neighbourhood Tenants’ Association committee for four years (Let tenants have a say, August 27).

While there, I spoke for about 1,000 people who were not members of that tenants’ association.

I was seconded to Islington Council’s housing sub-committee on the same brief.

No salary or payment was made at any time, even though some meetings lasted until midnight on occasions.

Expenses were claimed, but only when applied to work.

These were for printing costs and bus fares home after the lengthy Town Hall meetings.

Neither were salaries or wages expected.

After my health deteriorated, I had to step down.

Inevitably, Clerkenwell Neighbourhood Committee was abolished.

That Homes for Islington’s so-called directors can vote themselves pay is totally undemocratic and unacceptable.
