Real danger on the heath
Published: 16 September, 2010
• THE Hampstead Heath management is so busy scaremongering about some imaginary imminent collision between vehicles and man that it ignores the far more real danger posed by dogs (Heath ‘dog attack’ probed, September 9).
In the entire history of the Heath, there has been only one vehicle/man collision. Yet on a regular basis people, dogs and swans are being mauled or killed by dogs, speeding bike riders ignore the no-cycling signs, school children leave their litter all over the south east meadow and, in summer, heathland is being burnt up by illegal barbecues. Yet despite real, common and actual occurrences that endanger our enjoyment of the Heath, its management will have us believe a vehicle-only road to their offices is top priority.
