An old-school believer in equality and social justice

• ON behalf of Leighton Road Neighbourhood Association I would like to add to the warm tributes to Councillor Dave Horan (Labour stalwart fought for other people to the end, September 23). I well remember the difference it made to our association in our early battles over planning and environmental issues to have an active, dedicated and responsive councillor to represent us. He was always available, always listened and always offered help.

His early death has robbed the community of a caring and committed believer in equality and social justice. He was an old-school socialist and I am pleased that his last months saw his re-election in Kentish Town and appointment as chairman of the development control committee.

I remember too, and fondly, his conviviality and his liking both for a pint and our local, The Pineapple. We shall all miss him.

• DAVE Horan was the longest-serving member of the board of trustees of Camden Jobtrain. In its early days he helped secure the council funding which has remained to this day.

Dave’s radical input as chairman was always a reminder of why we were set up and what our priorities should be.

He was a true political stalwart and his connections seemed endless. It was through Dave we recruited local businessman and ex-councillor John Mills to our board; that MPs and ministers visited and appreciated our valuable contribution to society; and that a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed shadow spokesman for trade and industry called Tony Blair paid us a full-day visit in 1992.

He was a true friend, especially when times were rough. His confidence in my team and me has brilliantly served generations of vulnerable young people.

We thank you, Dave – you will be loved and remembered as the years stretch away. The legacy of your commitment will carry on.
