Use cops not flip-flops
Published: 21 October, 2010
• WHEN the decisions were made to provide lollipops, flip-flops, biscuits and even condoms by the Camden Community Safety partnership, to the inebriated and fight-lusty revellers of Camden were the mothers of this borough consulted?
We have all read about the draw of Camden and its association with celebrities visiting, the late-night bars, clubs, eateries and food vendors in the gossip columns of the press and in magazines, but does Camden have to lead an example whereby the actions of the drunk are accepted and pacified by sugary snacks?
Would it not be more appropriate to tackle this anti-social behaviour by not granting late night licences willy nilly to off-licences and bars alike?
And perhaps sending in undercover cops to assess how many already drunken people are being served alcohol on licensed premises?
Instead the weight of big business in Camden holds more influence because the night-time economy and all its negative derivatives (drugs and the taking of) is of more value to the borough than its residents. When residents complained about the various levels of anti-social behaviour on their doorstep, they did not realise that “problem-solving” meant doling free gifts out to this ilk.
