Security calls set off alarm

Published: 8 October, 2010

• I’D like to warn residents to be on their guard if they receive a telephone call or knock at the door from a firm collecting crime statistics or offering a free burglar alarm.

Some sales advisers may falsely say the installation scheme is backed by the government, a charity or the council. A firm has recently been reported to be using these tactics in Islington.

The alarm equipment might be free but the monitoring service and maintenance probably isn’t.

The firm makes its money through the monitoring service.

Our Trading Standards team recommends shopping around for alternative products and considering using a firm that is a member of a reputable trader association.

Above all, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

It’s an old saying but still true.
