Roadworks: it’s been hell
Published: 22 October, 2010
• WHEN I received a letter from Skanska saying work would be starting near my home, I phoned to ask about my disability bay and was told “arrangements would be made for me to park”. When the roadworks arrived, the no-parking signs were enforced by Islington Council so I had to move my car or get a ticket. Eventually I abandoned my car as it was taking too much time and energy finding a parking space.
After seven weeks of this I phoned Skanska on two occasions and asked about the parking it had promised me as my physical strength was getting low, with the constant trips to the supermarket as I cannot carry much at once.
When a worker called asking about access to my property I told him he could have access on December 14, seven weeks away, as I had been put through seven weeks of physical hell by the roadworks. He told me he would serve me with a five-day order, whatever that is.
I am so angry at being treated in this way by Skanska. I will not let them into my flat under any circumstances, even if this means going to court. I have to stick up for disabled people who cower in a corner due to lack of knowledge.
