Park oasis vandalised
Published: 8 October, 2010
DEBORAH Roberts is not the only person annoyed at what has been done to the little ‘spinney’ at the side of Whittington Park (Archway, we have a problem, October 1).
I too deplore the vandalising of this beautiful little oasis for sports facilities, which could perfectly well have been sited elsewhere.
I first discovered this area of woodland in the snow of 2003 – and it seemed like fairyland.
I have often visited it since, to enjoy the daffodils, the summer shade and the autumn colours.
I wrote to the environment department of Islington Council to protest – twice (in December 2008 and October 2009).
Neither letter received so much as an acknowledgement. I thought Islington prided itself on its green credentials – with expensive, water-consuming flower baskets all over the place.
I had to get planning permission to reduce just one conifer in my garden.
Yet the council thinks nothing of arbitrarily destroying woodland which is a habitat for large numbers of blackbirds, and an ideal play area for children.
