Historic workhouse that must be saved
Published: 22 October, 2010
• I WAS horrified to read the feature about the proposed demolition of the Strand Union Workhouse (West End Extra Forum, October 8).
That such a self-evidently important building should even be considered for demolition by Camden Council speaks volumes.
More distressing is the lack of opposition to demolition from the self-proclaimed Charlotte Street Association.
This is an association that takes an outraged moral high ground on Christmas lights on a tree last year but takes no such issue with this demolition.
The Charlotte Street Association mistakenly thinks that it acts on behalf of all residents of the area.
I believe it should be actively campaigning to preserve this vital property, which I think most Fitzrovia residents would prefer remained standing.
