Counting the people on streets
Published: 1 October, 2010
• I WAS a bit puzzled about the contents of your news brief (Guardians under fire, September 24) which said City Hall was on course to slash the number of City Guardians from 148 to 82 by this October.
As a former City Guardian who was made redundant from the council on August 11, all 80 such posts that existed in the council till July 1 were deleted and employees were still working from July to October 2010, their prior length of service in the city council determining at which date in that period they worked until. Those lucky enough to avoid redundancy began new contracts as wardens, along with former City Inspectors who passed a reinterviewing process.
The total in Street Management was 130 officers (80 Guardians and 50 City Inspectors) until July 2010 and will be 65 by October; after that there may possibly be further redundancies depending on the outcome of future restructures.
