Bargains at repair shop

Published: 29 October, 2010

• JUST made an unexpected discovery in Seven Sisters Road, near Finsbury Park Tube station. If you find Bright Sparks repair and re-use shop you can drop off broken electrical items and they fix them.

So far, they’ve mended my toaster and my mother-in-law’s vacuum cleaner and we’ve bought a floor lamp for peanuts. Yesterday, I noticed my neighbour walking home with a newly-fixed-up lawnmower that she’d bought from Bright Sparks for just £8.

It’s full of bargains (mended hair-dryers and desk lamps) but for it to work really well more people probably need to take or donate their broken kit.

I love the way it’s training people and recycling stuff; probably one of the council’s more genius ideas (which I believe was dreamt up by former Green councillor Katie Dawson).

Have a look at www.islington.gov.uk/brightsparks or visit Tuesdays to Saturdays from 12.30pm  to 5.30pm, or until 7pm on Thursdays.
