£2m pulled out of hat

Published: 29 October, 2010

• WHAT is Labour in Islington playing at? Just after the election in May I asked it to commit, this year, to £2million funding for Archway. The party voted in block fashion against the motion, saying there simply was not the cash available.

Then Archway Town Centre Management Group wrote asking for the £2million to be assured. This was refused and denied by Labour. It said there simply was not the cash available.

Now, although they’ve cut the much-loved flower baskets, not spent any money on filling potholes, boasted about a non-programme for stopping dog-fouling, closed a primary school (and who knows if other closures are planned), it has £2million funds for a new crossing and some wider pavements in Archway?

Does Labour actually have a coherent spending plan or is it as confused as its posturing in opposition? I’d have thought that after 10 years of opposition it would have come up with some properly thought out plan for the borough but on present action it doesn’t look like it.
