Spirit of equality

• I WAS delighted to see the article about the book The Spirit Level (John Gulliver, November 4). 

It is wonderful when academic work is spread into the public domain so quickly and at such  an important time for societal change. The point continually emphasised by the book’s authors Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett is that more equal societies benefit the affluent and even  the rich as well as the poorer citizens. 

There is less street violence, domestic violence, mental illness, teenage pregnancies, robberies and even murder.
