Promise a damp squib

Published: 5 November, 2010

• On November 4 last year, Councillor Paul Convery said: “This is the last year in which Islington will be denied a fireworks display.” This was accompanied by a vow from the Labour group that it would bring back fireworks night if it won control of the council. So having won, why does it not feel the need to make good on its promise?

We all know there are cuts to the local budget, but this was going to be a ticketed event which would cover its costs.

Given that it was the Labour council which cancelled it on “health and safety” grounds in 1999, we are at least owed an explanation and an apology.
